An exhilarating portrait of a young man’s journey to find purpose in others following a heartbreaking and abrupt separation. The Undergraduates is a novel brimming with truth and immediacy reserved for our generation of lost or misguided adults. Wildly powerful, this is the moving story of one man’s search to feel wanted, needed and loved – not always in the most traditional of ways.

Steven Snell’s style of writing in “The Undergraduates” is deceptively captivating. I say deceptively because he snares you on page 1, but you may not realize it till Shawn ventures through the fog of life and finds himself at work once more. This is a slow plodding of entrapment, a plot that wraps around you in the comforting embrace of someone else’s life.We enter Shawn’s life as he is sitting on the side of his bed with Karen, a married woman, asleep under his covers. She offers him comfort and a balm to his heart, though the relief is short lived and often more empty that helpful. This seems to be part of Shawn’s problem, if you can call it a problem. Like many of us raised in a generation of instant gratification and more free love than the 60’s, life has facets – though many prove meaningless. Shawn is questioning everything while he lives voraciously on the backs of others. Through literature, the internet and stories, he is a compilation of other people’s tales, he lacks a self-identity, something I could strongly relate to just a few years ago.
The thoughts that Shawn shares resonate, they speak of a phantom pain many of us will understand. Much of this book feels natural, as if we are silent witnesses in the life of a man seeking to cure an emptiness he can barely accept. From having an affair with a married woman to filling his nights or afternoons with other lovely faces, he pushes the thought of Gabrielle, the woman he is not sure if he loves or not, away. She causes hurt – he needs her, he can’t stand her. The mix is familiar and telling, the honesty of emotion raw.
A unique novel for a unique generation.

Obviously not my style. Was not hard to see how this was going to end. Finished because I refuse to pay for something and not complete.
